Hiya. This is my first blog post ever, and I’m beginning it exactly like everyone else, which is by telling you (both) that this is my first blog post ever and I’m only just learning how to use this marvelous tool of communication. I have been planning to start a blog for about a year now. The idea was – a year ago, that is – that I would blog about my year in Oxford, doing a fellowship for journalists at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford University. Well, I find myself still here, although the Fellowship has ended and my fellow Fellows have flown back to their home countries. So I might as well start this blog now, as I am living in social vacuum without my colleagues and friends from the previous academic year.
This blog is meant to be both in my native language Finnish and in English. As all Finns can read English anyway, I’ll keep this first introductory one in English only. My idea is to blog about writing a book about the Future of Journalism and anything interesting/peculiar that comes my way in the process of writing my first ever book. I am, after all, a journalist, so I am not used to working without a daily deadline or an editor breathing down my neck. I’ve now got a huge deadline in eleven months, which may become a bit daunting at some point. One of the motives behind this blog is to make some sense and order to this working-at-home-washing-dishes-instead-of-writing existence of mine.
This blog will not be all journalism though. I happen to be a culture writer (in my previous life I worked as literary editor for the Finnish newspaper Aamulehti) and an occasional DJ – so be warned that I may link to culture stories and Spotify playlists.
That’s all folks, for now.
