Burt Herman: Journalists need to learn to speak the same language with coders

Just came back from Italy, where I spent four fabulous days in Perugia, home of the International Journalism Festival. One of the especially notable speakers at the festival was Burt Herman, the founder of Hacks/Hackers and Storify. My Hacks/Hackers Helsinki co-founder Johannes Koponen shot this video on his iPad (sorry for the poor sound quality!). Here I ask Burt a few questions about Hacks/Hackers.

The next meetup in Helsinki is on Wednesday 9 May, 6 pm, at Pressiklubi. We have great speakers lined up:

  • Teppo Hudson, founder of Publishzer: “Brands As Publishers”
  • Pekka Pekkala, researcher at USC Annenberg: “The Future of Journalism Looks Cheap and Ugly”
  • Linda Liukas, founder of Rails Girls, community manager of Codecademy: “What journalists need to know about coding”

Also, do join our Meetup page. Most of the Helsinki bunch are following us on Facebook or Twitter (@hackshackershki), but we hope everyone will eventually join Meetup. It’s a more useful tool for organizing events, as you can browse previous topics and suggest new ones.
